The Toray brackish water membrane TM720D-400 is a high-rejection 8-inch reverse osmosis element built by Toray Industries in Japan for industrial and commercial RO plants across Oman. It produces around 10,500 GPD (40 m³/day) of permeate at 99.7% nominal salt rejection, which makes it a direct drop-in upgrade for plants currently running standard BW30-400 elements. Groundwater across Oman typically runs 800–3,000 ppm TDS, with high chloride, hardness and silica. Installation and Replacement Guidance
A Toray brackish water membrane on Omani feed water typically lasts 2–4 years, depending on pretreatment quality. Replace the element when normalised permeate flow drops more than 15%, salt passage rises more than 10%, or differential pressure across the stage exceeds 1 bar per element. Correct pretreatment is what protects your investment: multimedia filtration, antiscalant dosing sized to the actual feed analysis, activated carbon or SMBS dechlorination, and 5-micron cartridge filtration ahead of the high-pressure pump.
Load elements in the direction of the feed arrow, use fresh brine seals and interconnector O-rings on every change-out, and flush the plant with permeate before commissioning. Is the TM720D-400 interchangeable with Filmtec BW30-400?
Yes. Both are 8040 elements with 400 ft² active area and the same connections. The Toray element gives higher rejection at equal or lower operating pressure.
What feed TDS can the Toray brackish water membrane handle?
