How an RO antiscalant controls scale
Reverse osmosis concentrates dissolved salts in the reject stream, so the last elements in each pressure vessel see the highest saturation. Calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, barium and strontium sulphate and silica are the species that usually come out of solution first. An antiscalant keeps those salts dispersed past their normal solubility limit and interferes with crystal growth, so the plant can run at a higher recovery without scaling the membrane surface.
Dose selection
Dose is set by water chemistry and recovery, not by plant size. Start from a complete feed water analysis covering calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, sulphate, barium, strontium, silica, pH, temperature and conductivity. Projection software then calculates saturation at the design recovery and returns the required dose. Brackish borewell water in Oman, high silica feeds and recovery targets above 75 percent all need closer review than treated municipal supply.

- Record feed, permeate and concentrate pressure, flow and conductivity every day.
- Normalise the readings so temperature effects are separated from real performance loss.

- Clean the membranes before scale becomes difficult to remove.
