Description

Silica gravel Oman Muscat – Washed Silica Gravel Support Bed – 2.0–4.0 mm | UV Water Systems

A correctly functioning pressure filter requires more than just filtration media — it needs a properly designed support bed beneath the sand or carbon media to ensure uniform water collection and prevent media loss during backwash. Without a gravel support layer, fine sand particles migrate into the underdrain laterals and nozzles during backwash, blocking collection points and creating uneven flow distribution through the media bed. The washed silica gravel support bed supplied by UV Water Systems in Muscat fills the lower section of the filter vessel beneath the sand media, providing a stable, permeable foundation that holds the filter media in place and allows filtered water to flow evenly into the collection underdrain system.

Role of the Gravel Support Layer

The 2.0–4.0 mm gravel grading is positioned as the lower layer in a multi-layer media loading scheme. Its particle size is large enough not to migrate into standard underdrain nozzles or lateral slots (which have 0.2–0.5 mm slot openings) while being small enough to provide support to the finer 0.5–1.0 mm sand above. During backwash, the higher-density gravel remains in place as the lighter sand bed is fluidised and cleaned — maintaining a clear physical boundary between support and filtration zones. UV Water Systems recommends a 150–200 mm depth of gravel support beneath sand media in standard FRP pressure vessels.

Key Features and Benefits of Silica gravel Oman Muscat

  • Prevents underdrain fouling: Stops fine sand particles from entering lateral slots and nozzles — one of the most common causes of filter underpressure and uneven backwash distribution in improperly loaded filters.
  • Uniform backwash distribution: The gravel layer distributes backwash flow evenly across the entire vessel cross-section, ensuring the sand bed above is fully and evenly fluidised during cleaning cycles.
  • Maintains filtration media position: Prevents downward migration of sand media during downflow filtration — keeps the sand-gravel interface stable over years of cyclic operation.
  • Acid-washed and graded: Washed to remove surface fines and graded to tight 2.0–4.0 mm tolerance — uniform sizing avoids bridging or uneven support that causes channelling through the media bed.
  • Chemically inert SiO₂: Pure silica gravel does not leach minerals into the filtered water or react with feed water chemistry, antiscalants, or coagulants used in pre-treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need gravel if my filter has a nozzle underdrain? Standard nozzle underdrains with 0.2–0.3 mm slots still require a gravel support layer above them — fine sand media can migrate through slots during backwash at high flow rates without a gravel buffer layer. UV Water Systems recommends 150 mm of gravel regardless of underdrain type.

How do I know how much gravel to order? For a 24-inch (600 mm) diameter vessel with a 150 mm gravel layer, approximately 15–20 kg of gravel is needed. UV Water Systems calculates the exact quantity for any vessel size — contact us with the vessel diameter and required bed depth at +968 9763 7786.
