Why pool water treatment in Oman is different
- UV burns off chlorine. Unstabilised chlorine in direct Omani sun can lose most of its strength within a couple of hours. Cyanuric acid as a stabiliser is not optional here.
- Warm water accelerates everything. Algae and bacteria multiply far faster at 32 degrees than at 22, and chlorine is consumed faster doing the same job.
- Evaporation concentrates minerals. Water leaves, calcium and salts stay. Hardness and TDS creep upward month after month.
- Dust and sand load the filter. Sand filters here need backwashing far more often than the manual suggests.
- Hard fill water. Topping up with hard mains water pushes calcium hardness up and leaves scale on tiles and in the heater.
The 6 essential steps of pool water treatment in Oman
1. Circulation
Nothing else works if the water is not moving. The whole pool volume should turn over at least once a day, and in summer twice. Run the pump 8 to 12 hours daily during the hot months, and set return jets to push water in a circular pattern so no dead corner is left behind. Dead spots are where algae starts.
2. Filtration
Empty skimmer and pump baskets before they restrict flow. Backweek the sand filter when pressure rises 0.3 to 0.5 bar above the clean reading. In dusty periods that can mean weekly. Replace filter sand every four to five years, sooner if it has channelled or cemented.
3. Testing
Test free chlorine and pH twice a week in summer, once a week in winter. Test total alkalinity, calcium hardness and cyanuric acid monthly. Dosing without testing is guessing, and it is how most pools end up either corrosive or scaled.
4. Disinfection
Chlorine remains the workhorse. Calcium hypochlorite granules at around 65 to 70 percent and trichlor tablets are both widely used in Oman. Dose in the evening so the chlorine works overnight instead of being destroyed by the sun. An automatic dosing pump holds the residual far more steadily than hand dosing every few days.
5. Balance
Correct in this order: total alkalinity first, then pH, then calcium hardness. Alkalinity is the buffer, and adjusting pH before it is set means chasing your own tail. Above pH 7.8 chlorine loses much of its killing power, which is why a pool with plenty of chlorine can still go cloudy.
6. Shock and algae control
Shock every two weeks in summer, or after heavy bather load, a dust storm or rain. Add an algaecide as prevention rather than as a rescue, and brush the walls and floor weekly. Brushing does more against early algae than any chemical.

Chemical safety and storage
- Never mix chemicals together. Chlorine and acid produce chlorine gas. Add each one to water separately, never one into another.
- Always add chemical to water, never water to chemical.

- Keep the pump running while dosing and dose at the deep end or through the skimmer.
