Why Cooling Towers in Oman Scale So Fast
A cooling tower loses water by evaporation and leaves the minerals behind. Make-up water in Muscat, Sohar and the interior often arrives with high calcium hardness and TDS, and summer air temperatures above 45°C push evaporation rates up. Each cycle of concentration multiplies the calcium in the basin until it drops out as calcium carbonate on the hottest surfaces: condenser tubes, plate heat exchangers and fill packs.

- Power: a thin layer of scale on condenser tubes raises approach temperature and chiller kW per ton.

How the Vulcan Electronic System Works
The Vulcan electronic anti-scale system is made in Germany by Christiani Wassertechnik. Copper impulse bands are wound around the outside of the pipe and a 48 Volt control unit sends a modulated signal through them. Calcium carbonate forms small crystals in the water instead of hard scale on the metal. The crystals travel with the flow and leave through blowdown or a filter.

On an open-circuit tower, install the unit on the circulation line just before the heat exchanger, and drain the basin regularly or add a centrifugal separator so the loosened solids leave the system.
Field Results from Hot-Climate Sites
- Marina Plaza, Dubai: a Vulcan S500 on the condenser return line cut scale-inhibitor dosing from 6 litres a day to 1 litre, and fill scale became soft enough to wash off.
- Supermal Karawaci, Indonesia: a 408 TR tower ran four years on an S500 with no chemical treatment and condenser tubes still clean at the final inspection.
- Swarovski plant, Vietnam: chemical use on the cooling towers dropped by more than 80% within six months, and condenser approach stayed under 2°C.

Can I stop chemical dosing completely? Many sites reduce dosing step by step while checking conductivity and tube condition. Biocide may still be needed where Legionella control rules apply.
Does it remove existing scale? Yes, gradually. Existing deposits soften and flake off over weeks to months.
Is it a water softener? No. Minerals stay in the water; they just stop sticking to surfaces.
