Step 1: Isolate and plan
Close the inlet valve, inform occupants, and confirm how long the building can run without stored water. Most villas need three to four hours.
Step 2: Drain down
Empty the tank through the drain line, or pump it out. The last 50 mm holds the silt and should be removed separately rather than stirred through the outlet.
Step 3: Remove sludge and debris
Vacuum or scoop out the settled layer. In Oman this is usually fine sand mixed with organic matter. This step is what separates a real clean from a rinse.
Step 4: Scrub every surface
Walls, floor, corners, baffles, the underside of the lid and the inlet and outlet fittings. Biofilm clings hardest at the waterline and around penetrations.
Step 5: High-pressure rinse
Wash down and pump out. Repeat until the rinse water runs clear.
Step 6: Disinfect

Drain the disinfectant fully, refill, then run every tap in the building until the chlorine smell clears. Skipping this leaves residents with strongly chlorinated water for days.
Step 8: Test and record

- Never enter alone. One person inside, one person outside at the hatch, at all times.

- Never mix chlorine with acid descalers. The reaction releases chlorine gas.
