Buying distilled water in Oman looks simple until you compare two suppliers side by side. One can reads 0.8 ppm on a TDS meter. Another, labelled the same way and sold for less, reads 35 ppm. The label does not tell you which is which. Your battery, your autoclave, or your lab result will.

What is distilled water?
Distilled water sold in Oman is water stripped of dissolved salts, minerals and impurities until it is close to chemically pure. In classical distillation the water is boiled and the vapour condensed, leaving salts and heavy metals behind in the boiling vessel. The result carries total dissolved solids below 1 ppm and electrical conductivity under 2 µS/cm.
That purity is the whole point. Ordinary water leaves scale and carries ions that react with metals and reagents. Distilled water does neither.
One thing to be clear about: distilled water is not drinking water. It has no minerals, it tastes flat, and it is not meant for daily consumption. For drinking, use a reverse osmosis system with a remineralisation stage.
Distilled vs demineralised vs RO water
These three terms get used interchangeably in the market, and that costs buyers money or ruins their process. The difference:

In practice distilled and demineralised water perform almost identically in industrial use. What separates a good supply from a bad one is the conductivity figure on the batch certificate, not the word printed on the label.
7 uses for distilled water in Oman
Demand for distilled water in Oman does not come from one sector. These are the applications we actually deliver into across the Sultanate:
1. Vehicle and generator batteries
The single largest use. Omani heat evaporates battery electrolyte quickly and the level needs regular topping up. Tap water introduces chlorides and calcium into the cells, sulphates build on the plates, and the battery loses capacity within months. Workshops and standby generator sites usually buy in 200 litre drums.
2. Medical and analytical laboratories
Reagent preparation, glassware rinsing, and feeding automated analysers. Any residual ion becomes an error in the result. Hospitals and testing labs in Muscat ask for a batch test certificate with every delivery, and they are right to.
3. Autoclaves and sterilisers
The steam generator inside an autoclave scales up on ordinary water. Sterilisation efficiency drops and the heating element fails early. Manufacturers specify low-conductivity feed water for exactly this reason.
4. Pharmaceutical and cosmetics manufacturing
Used both as a formulation ingredient and as the cleaning medium between production batches. Plants in the industrial areas normally take 1000 litre IBCs.
5. Boilers and cooling systems
Low-salt feed water reduces scaling and carryover, cuts blowdown cycles, and extends tube life. Hotels and factories running steam boilers see the benefit directly on fuel and maintenance.
6. Solar panel cleaning
Washing panels with hard water leaves white spotting that blocks light and drops output. Distilled or demineralised water dries without residue, which is why solar O&M contractors in Oman specify it.
7. Home and office equipment
Steam irons, humidifiers, CPAP machines, aquariums, e-bike batteries. The 20 litre can covers all of these.
Specifications to ask for before you buy
Quality of distilled water in Oman varies enough that the numbers matter more than the supplier’s reputation. Before approving anyone, ask for these in writing:
- Total dissolved solids (TDS): below 1 ppm for laboratory and pharmaceutical use, below 5 ppm for batteries.
- Electrical conductivity: under 2 µS/cm. Some lab applications call for 18 MΩ resistivity.
- pH: 5.5 to 7.5. High-purity water drifts slightly acidic because it absorbs carbon dioxide from air. That is normal, not a fault.
- Container: food-grade HDPE, new rather than refilled, with a tamper seal.
- Batch test certificate: production date, batch number, conductivity reading.
The international reference for classifying pure water is ASTM D1193, which sorts reagent water into four types by resistivity and organic carbon content. Ask your supplier which type their product matches.
What drives the price of distilled water in Oman
Most buyers ask about price first, but the price of distilled water in Oman is not one number. Four things move it:
- Purity grade. Getting below 1 ppm means an extra ion exchange stage with resin that gets consumed and replaced. Battery water does not need the grade a laboratory does, and should not be priced as if it did.
- Pack size. Cost per litre in a 1000 litre IBC is clearly lower than in a 20 litre can, because the container and the delivery spread across more volume.
- Volume and contract. A monthly supply contract prices lower than ad-hoc orders.
- Delivery location. Inside Muscat differs from shipping to Sohar, Salalah or Sur.
Comparing quotes only means something when the conductivity figures match. A cheaper offer at 30 ppm is not a cheaper offer, it is a different product.

How we produce distilled water in Oman
We produce distilled water in Oman at our Muscat facility in stages, each one removing a specific class of contaminant:
- Pre-treatment: multimedia filter for suspended solids, then activated carbon to strip chlorine that would otherwise attack the membranes.
- Softening: calcium and magnesium removed to protect the RO membrane from scaling. More on this in our guide to water softeners in Oman.
- Reverse osmosis: Dupont Filmtec membranes rejecting 96–99% of dissolved salts.
- Deionisation: mixed-bed resin polishing the remaining salts to below 1 ppm.
- UV sterilisation: a UV unit immediately before filling to prevent bacterial growth.
- Filling and testing: new containers, with conductivity measured on every batch before it leaves the warehouse.

Storage and handling
Summer heat and long storage are what spoil distilled water in Oman after delivery. Purity is easy to lose once the container is opened:
- Keep the container closed. High-purity water absorbs carbon dioxide from air and conductivity climbs within hours.
- Do not decant into metal or ordinary glass. Use HDPE or polypropylene only.
- Store out of direct sun, below 35°C.
- Do not reuse empty cans for other water and then refill them with distilled.
- Fit a dedicated pump or tap to 200 litre drums and IBCs instead of dipping into them.
Common buying mistakes
Five errors account for most of the complaints we hear about distilled water in Oman:
- Buying on price alone. A can that is half a rial cheaper may hold plain RO water at 40 ppm. The difference shows up in the battery or the test result, never on the label.
- Not asking for the batch certificate. A serious supplier hands it over without being pushed.
- Stockpiling. Buy to monthly consumption rather than filling a store room with drums that lose purity while they sit.
- Drinking it. No minerals, not intended for consumption.
- Diluting with tap water to stretch the volume. This cancels the reason you bought it.

Is distilled water in Oman safe to drink?
It is not intended as daily drinking water. It has none of the minerals the body needs and tastes flat. For drinking, use an RO system with a remineralisation stage.
What is the difference between distilled and demineralised water?
The production method. Distillation boils and condenses; demineralisation uses ion exchange resin. Final purity is very close, and most industrial applications accept either.
How long does distilled water last?
