Hospital water treatment in Oman has to deliver two different water qualities from one incoming supply: potable water for drinking points and wards, and demineralised water for laboratories, sterilisers and equipment. Scope of the system

The line was built in stages so that each unit protects the one after it:

  • Sand filter – removes suspended solids from the incoming supply
  • Multimedia filter (MMF) – reduces turbidity ahead of the softener
  • Water softener – removes hardness to protect the RO membranes, boilers and equipment
  • 500 LPH reverse osmosis unit – DuPont Filmtec membranes, Grundfos high-pressure pump
  • DI (demineralisation) unit – final polishing for laboratory and equipment-grade water

Why hospital water treatment in Oman needs this much equipment

Muscat mains and well water carry high hardness and TDS. In a hospital that translates into three separate failures. Scale forms in boilers, autoclaves and steriliser chambers, shortening equipment life and voiding warranties. Laboratory results drift when feed water conductivity is inconsistent. And dialysis and CSSD both work to water specifications that ordinary filtration cannot reach.

Removing the load in stages is what makes the plant reliable. Sand and multimedia filters take suspended solids so the softener resin does not blind. The softener takes hardness so the membranes do not scale. The RO takes the dissolved load so the DI resin is not exhausted in weeks. Skip a stage and the cost simply moves downstream, usually to the most expensive component.

Design points that matter

  1. Full feed analysis first. TDS, hardness, alkalinity, silica, chlorides, iron and SDI. Every downstream sizing decision comes from these numbers.
  2. Peak demand, not average. A hospital’s draw-off is not flat across the day. Storage and pump sizing follow the peak.
  3. Redundancy where it counts. Duty and standby pumps on any stage the hospital cannot run without.
  4. Sample points at every stage. You cannot troubleshoot a plant you cannot measure.
  5. Access for membrane pulling. Designed in at layout stage, not discovered at the first service.

Standards and validation

Potable points are measured against Oman Standard OS 8 and the WHO guidelines for drinking water quality. Laboratory and equipment water is specified by conductivity and, where relevant, by the equipment manufacturer’s own limits. We issue testing and commissioning reports, operation manuals and operator training at handover, so the maintenance team owns the plant from day one.
