Safe drinking water in Oman is not a given just because the supply is treated at source. Water can leave a desalination plant meeting every standard and still reach your glass carrying scale, sediment, chlorine by-products or bacteria picked up in the pipe and the tank. This is what actually goes wrong between the plant and your tap, and how to check your own supply.
What can compromise safe drinking water in Oman
Storage tanks
Most properties store water in a rooftop or underground tank. Tank water sits warm for days, sediment settles, and biofilm grows on the walls. An uncleaned tank is the single most common source of contamination we find. Tanks should be drained, scrubbed and disinfected annually.
High TDS and hardness
Municipal supply in Muscat typically runs 150-400 ppm TDS. Blended and well-fed properties reach 800-2,000 ppm. High hardness is not a health hazard at these levels, but it destroys heaters, blocks aerators and makes water taste flat and salty.
Chlorine and by-products
Chlorine is added to keep the network safe, which it does. It also affects taste and smell, and reacts with organic matter to form trihalomethanes. A carbon filter removes it at the point of use.
Old pipework
Galvanised pipe corrodes and releases iron, which shows up as brown staining and a metallic taste. In older buildings, plumbing is often the weakest link in the chain to safe drinking water in Oman.
Tanker deliveries
Tanker supply is only as clean as the tanker. There is no way to verify it visually, which is why properties on tanker water should treat disinfection as mandatory rather than optional.
Seven checks for safe drinking water in Oman
- Measure TDS at the kitchen tap with a calibrated pen. Above 500 ppm, drinking water treatment is worth doing.
- Test hardness. Above 120 ppm as CaCO3 you will see scale and should consider a softener.
- Smell the water after running it 30 seconds. Chlorine, earthy or metallic notes each point somewhere different.
- Fill a clear glass and let it stand. Cloudiness that clears from the bottom up is air; cloudiness that settles is sediment.
- Check your tank. When was it last cleaned? If nobody knows, it is overdue.
- Look at your aerators. White crusting means hardness; brown means iron.
- Test the product water of any filter you already own. A filter nobody has verified is an assumption, not a safeguard.
What the standards say
Oman Standard OS 8 sets the national limits for potable water, and the WHO guidelines for drinking water quality provide the international reference. Both are written for water at the point of supply. Neither can account for what happens in your building, which is exactly where the risk sits.

Bottled water is not the answer
Bottled water is the usual reflex answer to safe drinking water in Oman, and it is a poor one. Bottled water solves drinking, not cooking, ice, coffee or washing vegetables.
