Description
Strong Base Anion Resin Oman Muscat– 25 Litre Bag | UV Water Systems Oman
Demineralisation plants (DM plants) produce water of near-zero ionic content by removing all dissolved cations and anions from the feed water using two sequential ion exchange vessels — a cation exchanger (SAC resin) followed by an anion exchanger (SBA resin). While the cation resin handles positively charged ions (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium), the anion resin in the second vessel removes all negatively charged ions including chloride, sulphate, nitrate, bicarbonate, and silica. The Strong Base Anion (SBA) exchange resin supplied by UV Water Systems in Muscat is a Type II gel-type resin in the hydroxide (OH⁻) form, used in demineralisation plants for laboratories, pharmaceutical facilities, boiler feed water systems, and high-purity industrial processes across Oman.
How SBA Resin Removes Anions
Type II SBA resin consists of cross-linked polystyrene beads with quaternary ammonium functional groups in the hydroxide (OH⁻) form. When the outflow from the SAC cation column — now depleted of all cations and containing only weak acids (carbonic acid and silicic acid) in addition to strong acid anions — passes through the SBA bed, anions exchange with hydroxide ions on the resin. Chloride, sulphate, and nitrate exchange readily (strong acid anions). Silicic acid and carbonic acid also exchange, though at slower kinetics requiring sufficient bed contact time. The exchanged hydroxide combines with the hydrogen ions passing through from the SAC column, producing pure water. Regeneration uses 4–8% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution to displace all anions as their sodium salts.
Key Features and Benefits
- Complete anion removal: Removes all major anions — chloride, sulphate, nitrate, bicarbonate — plus dissolved silica, producing water with conductivity below 5 µS/cm when paired with a quality SAC cation resin.
- Silica control: Silica removal is a key function of SBA resin — critical for boiler feed water applications in Oman’s industrial sector where silica deposition in boilers causes serious operational problems.
- Type II selectivity: Type II resin has lower preference for sulphate over chloride than Type I, making it more efficient to regenerate with NaOH in high-sulphate feed waters common in Oman.
- High operating capacity: Operating exchange capacity of ≥0.8 meq/mL in the chloride/sulphate cycle, ensuring long service runs between regenerations for Oman’s moderate to high TDS feed water sources.
- Gel structure for kinetic efficiency: Gel-type resin beads have higher exchange kinetics than macroporous type — faster ion exchange means shorter contact times are required for complete anion removal at design flow rates.

Applications Across Oman
SBA resin is the standard anion exchange media for two-bed deionisation and mixed bed polishing systems in Oman’s laboratories, hospitals, pharmaceutical plants, and industrial facilities requiring high-purity water. UV Water Systems designs, supplies, and services DM plant systems across Muscat and Oman, including resin supply, vessel loading, and regeneration chemical supply.
Frequently Asked Questions
What regenerant is used with SBA resin? SBA resin is regenerated with 4–8% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution at a dose of 80–120 g NaOH per litre of resin. UV Water Systems supplies caustic soda for SBA regeneration alongside the resin in Muscat.
How do I know when the anion resin is exhausted? Monitor the effluent conductivity and silica concentration. When conductivity exceeds 5 µS/cm or silica exceeds 0.1 mg/L (application-dependent), the resin requires regeneration. UV Water Systems installs inline conductivity monitors on all DM plant outlets it commissions in Oman.
